• 4.0 out of 5 stars from John -- One of the best travel books of the nineteenth century : I came across a reference to this book in "A History of Histories", where it is described as one of the best travel books of the nineteenth century, and was intrigued. It tells the story of travelling West in the middle of that century and life on the move over the plains. The author, Francis Parkman, a New Englander and graduate of Harvard, had more interest in the Indian communities and French trappers he came across than the settlers heading west. He joined them on buffalo hunts and enjoyed their hospitality and describes ways of life that were soon to be utterly changed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 22, 2013 )
